La Candelaria is catholic celebration, but why do we, Mexicans, eat tamales during this day? The tradition of eating tamales comes from the 1st day of the Aztec calendar celebrations to honour Tláloc, Chalchiuhtlicue y Quetzalcóatl.

Tamales were always present in the offerings to the gods due to them being made from maize, which, according to their beliefs, was use to create the humans.
